Electrical Switch Sparked but MCB Did Not Trip in Subang SS12
An electrical problem can happen at any time, even during a normal morning at home. This happened to Mr Kamal from Subang SS12. This morning, his wife was preparing breakfast for their son. When she switched on the kitchen hood, she noticed a spark coming from the switch.
She immediately stopped using the switch and told Mr Kamal about it. Mr Kamal also knew that it was better not to take any chances. He asked his wife not to use the switch again and started looking for an electrician in the Subang area. He called a few companies, but some could only come the next day, while others were fully booked until the following week.
Luckily, Mr Kamal remembered Mr Alex, our senior engineer. Mr Alex had helped him with an electrical problem at his office the previous month. Mr Kamal contacted his office admin, got our phone number and called us. We arranged for our electrician to come and check the problem.

A Sparking Switch Should Not Be Ignored
When we arrived, we checked the affected switch, wiring and electrical system. The important thing we found was that the MCB had not tripped when the switch sparked. We explained to Mr Kamal that a sparking switch should not be treated as a small problem. There can be different reasons for a switch to spark, such as a loose connection, damaged switch, wiring problem or electrical fault.
It is also important to understand that an MCB and RCCB have different functions. An MCB mainly protects a circuit from overcurrent conditions such as overload and short circuit. An RCCB is designed to detect earth leakage and provide additional protection against electric shock. This is why having the right electrical protection in the DB box is important.
Checking the DB Box, Wiring and Earthing
We checked the electrical wiring and the existing DB box. After we explained the condition to Mr Kamal, he decided to upgrade his DB box with better protection. We carried out the necessary electrical work, including checking the wiring, upgrading the DB box, installing suitable RCCB and MCB protection. After completing the work, we tested the system again to make sure everything was working properly.
Mr Kamal was happy that the electrical problem had been settled. He also thanked Mr Alex and our electrician for responding quickly.

Electrical Safety Is Important When Children Are at Home
Electrical safety is something every family should take seriously, especially when there are young children at home. Children may not understand how dangerous electricity can be. A damaged switch, loose socket, exposed wire or faulty electrical appliance can become a safety risk.
If you notice a switch or socket sparking, a burning smell, black marks, damaged wiring, frequent electrical trips or even a small electric shock from an appliance, it is better to stop using the affected point and have it checked. Do not wait until the electrical problem becomes worse.
For older houses, it is also a good idea to have the DB box, electrical wiring and earthing checked, especially if the electrical system has not been inspected for many years.
