Why This New Inverter aircond Keeps Tripping
Good morning! Last Friday, we received a call from a damansara customer who needed help fixing an earthing issue at his house. He explained that his newly installed inverter aircond kept tripping a few minutes after being turned on. According to him, the aircond technician had already replaced the compressor with a brand-new unit and even the indoor unit was later changed, yet the problem still persisted. This situation made the customer very frustrated because the aircond was new, and each replacement required him to take leave and stay home for the technicians to do their work.
At first, the aircond team came and checked the wiring, claiming that the wire insulation was not in good condition. But they only used a test pen for inspection which made the customer doubtful and reluctant to trust their conclusion. No replacement was done during the first visit and the aircond continued to trip. After the customer lodged a complaint with the aircond factory, another team came for the second visit and replaced the outdoor compressor. During testing, the unit appeared fine and did not trip while the technician was on site. Unfortunately, later that night, when the customer turned it on before bedtime, the aircond tripped again. The house became extremely stuffy and he could not sleep the entire night due to the uncomfortable heat.
On the third visit, the aircond technician replaced the indoor unit and also checked the earthing for all three of the customer’s older air conds. He found that those three units had no earthing, yet they did not trip at all. Surprisingly, only the new inverter aircond continued to trip repeatedly, despite all the replacements and checks.
How We Test Your Earthing System
He also mentioned that he has three older airconds at home. According to him, the aircond technician checked and claimed that all three units had no earthing connection. I then asked the customer how the technician tested and confirmed the absence of earthing. The customer explained that the aircond guy used only a test pen to check it. This method, however, is not reliable because a test pen can only detect live voltage and cannot accurately determine whether the earthing is properly connected or functioning. To verify earthing continuity or resistance, proper testing tools such as an earth tester or multimeter should be used to obtain accurate results. Below is our normal earthing value testing procedure to ensure accurate and reliable results:
The earth testing procedure is carried out to ensure that the earthing system provides a safe and low-resistance path for fault current to discharge into the ground. First, the main power supply is turned off, and the earth electrode is identified and isolated. Using an earth resistance tester (or Megger tester), two auxiliary electrodes are inserted into the soil in a straight line, with the current electrode about 30–50 meters away and the potential electrode about 10–15 meters away from the earth rod. The tester is then connected, and the resistance value is measured in ohms. Consistent readings confirm an accurate setup. For domestic systems, earth resistance should generally be below 5 ohms, and for sensitive or lightning protection systems, below 1 ohm. If readings are high, additional earth rods or soil improvements may be required. Finally, all connections are restored and verified for proper grounding continuity.
New Earth Rod? That Alone Won’t Fix Your Aircond Earthing
If your aircond shows no earthing at the aircond point, the problem could be caused by several factors. The earth wire from the DB box to the aircond point might be damaged, or the wire from the earth chamber could be faulty. It’s also possible that no earth rod was installed, or that the earth wire has become disconnected from the rod. Other hidden issues, such as corrosion at connections or poor-quality wiring, can also affect proper earthing. Each of these possibilities requires careful inspection and testing to pinpoint the exact problem. Making sure your earthing system works properly is important not just to keep your aircond safe, but also to protect your entire electrical system and prevent any potential damage or hazards. Installing new earth rods alone does not automatically resolve a “no earth” issue at the aircond point, it must be correctly connected and tested.
Inverter aircond Tripping Due to Earthing Problem
When we arrived, we began by inspecting the DB box, MCB, RCCB, and the earthing system connections to determine whether the tripping was caused by a grounding fault, leakage current, or voltage imbalance. Inverter-type airconds are more sensitive to electrical irregularities and may trip due to improper earthing or surge protection issues, rather than a fault in the unit itself. Cases like this highlight the importance of proper earthing installation, SPD protection, and regular electrical inspections to ensure the stability and safety of all appliances, especially sensitive equipment like inverter airconds. Upon inspection, we found that the earth wire from the DB to the 15A aircond power point was not connected. And the earth wire from the Earth chamber to the DB box was disconnected and the measured earth resistance value was 195 ohms, indicating a serious earthing problem that needed immediate attention.
