Tripping MCBs to Faulty Earthing In Selangor & KL
We have been in this industry for almost 30 years, and during that time we’ve helped thousands of customers from simple tripping MCBs to major wiring faults. With so much experience, there’s hardly a problem we haven’t seen or solved. Many of them call us first, then decide to hire a cheaper wireman for the repair. But when the same problem happens again, or when the wireman cannot fix it properly, they end up coming back to us the second time.
We receive hundreds of phone enquiries every week, and many of them sound very familiar. People usually call us when something in their home suddenly stops working, maybe the water heaters won’t turn on, the aircond has failed or an MCB keeps tripping. These callers share their frustrations, compare prices and sometimes even tell us stories about other wiremen they have tried before. Macam-macam funny cerita ada! Sometimes I laugh until my stomach hurts just listening to them.
Enquiry from Cheras
Customer: “My oven is not working and my washing machine also stopped working. One of the MCBs tripped. Can you come and check?”
Tronica: “Sure, our troubleshooting charge is RM300.”
Customer: “Whoa, whoa, whoa… that’s so expensive! My Indonesian wireman only charges RM200.”
Tronica: “Alright, but can he actually fix the problem? If he’s so cheap, why are you still calling me?”
Customer: “Ya… he doesn’t know how to check.”
Problems faced by this customer:
He hired a very cheap wireman to rewire his whole house during renovation. But in less than three years, many of the kitchen sockets had already stopped working. The microwave, fridge and washing machine couldn’t be used because the wireman only installed one set of cables to supply all the appliances in the kitchen and laundry area. I remember this customer called us at that time to fix his electrical problems. We quoted him a fair price for proper repair, but he didn’t want to proceed. Instead, he chose a cheaper wireman and now, just a few years later, all those problems have come back, even worse than before.
Enquiry from Shah Alam
Customer: “My airconds in the master bedroom and second bedroom cannot turn on. The bathroom light also can not turn on. My regular wireman already fixed it, but the problems came back after a few days. Can you come and check?”
Tronica: “We suggest you ask your wireman to give us a call, so that we can understand what is going on.”
Customer: “What do you need to know? I can tell you. Or you just come and check and tell me what the problems are.”
Tronica: “We charge RM450 for checking because your DB box is huge and has so many MCBs and RCCBs inside.”
Customer: “Not free meh… checking?”
Tronica: “Boss, we need to bring many tools, multimeters and at least two of us to do the checking. We also have to cover toll, petrol, labour, vehicle maintenance and opportunity cost. That’s why we can’t do it for free.”
Customer: “Never mind, I will try to figure it out myself.”
Three days later…..
Customer (second call): “Okay, I agree with the RM450 checking fee. Can you come and check for me?”
Problems faced by this customer:
We found that the second bedroom aircond point was looped from the master bedroom and the lighting wires were also looped between the two bedrooms. These shortcut wiring methods caused overloading, repeated failures and can cause fire. And the maid told us another wireman came yesterday. He charged RM250 for checking, but in the end, he couldn’t solve the problem and didn’t know why ended up arguing with the owner. To be honest, we already knew from our phone conversations that this customer is a bit nasty and bossy
Enquiry from Damasara
Customer: “How much do you charge for earth system installation? How many rods do you need to get below 10 ohm? How much do you charge per rod?”
Tronica: “Before we can advise you properly, can you send us some photos first? We’ll need to see your DB box, your earth chamber pit and also the exterior of your house. These help us assess the condition and calculate how many rods may be needed.”
Customer: “Just tell me how much you charge per rod.”
Tronica: “It doesn’t work like that, boss. Every house has different soil conditions. Sometimes five rod is enough to achieve below 10 ohms, but sometimes eight rods or fifteen rods are required. If we simply quote per rod without proper checking, you may end up with an earthing system that doesn’t meet safety standards. That’s why we ask for photos first to make sure we give you the right advice and cost.”
Customer: “Actually, I already got a Myanmar guy to do my wiring and earth system installation. But he doesn’t have an earth resistance meter, and he doesn’t know how to test the reading.”
Tronica: “Like that, boss, we don’t want to get involved. You better settle with your Myanmar wireman first. Without proper testing equipment, the installation is just guesswork.
Customer: “Can you take over the job then?”
Tronica: “Step one, boss you send us some photos and details first. Once we understand the condition, we can advise properly and take over if necessary. Otherwise, we are just shooting in the dark, same as your Myanmar guy.”
Problems faced by this customer
This customer wanted cheap solutions. The wireman installed two earth rods but used only 2.5mm cable for the earth wire. Normally, the correct practice is to use 10mm or even 16mm copper earth cable. Using 2.5mm is way below standard, unsafe, and completely defeats the purpose of an earthing system. Without proper testing equipment and correct materials, the customer’s “earthing system” was nothing more than a false sense of security.
