House Power Keeps Going On and Off in Taman Tasik Puchong

Yesterday, we received a call from a customer in Taman Tasik Puchong Prima who was facing a very frustrating situation. His house electricity kept going on and off throughout the day. Sometimes got electric, sometimes no electric. He was working from home, but every time the power cut off, his computer shut down and his Zoom meeting got disconnected. Imagine trying to focus on work while your lights flicker and your Wi-Fi keeps restarting. The customer said this issue had been happening since last week, and recently he could even smell something burning. That’s when he decided to call us to check what was really going on inside his DB box and wiring system, because simple power resets were no longer helping.

When he described the problem to me, I already suspected that the issue might be with the TNB incoming wires. From experience, this kind of on-and-off electricity usually happens when either the neutral cable is loose or the live cable connection is not stable. A loose connection at the incoming point can cause voltage to drop or disappear randomly, which explains why the customer’s lights, computer, and other appliances kept turning off and on by themselves.

TNB Replaced Cut-Out Fuse and Cable After Power Failure

I advised him to call TNB straight away and report the issue, since the problem seemed to be coming from their incoming supply. TNB informed him that their technician would arrive within a few hours. However, about an hour later, he called me again and said his TNB meter was showing no reading at all. That meant the power supply was completely cut off and there was no electricity in the whole house.

Around 6 p.m., the customer WhatsApped me and told me that the TNB technician had already replaced the cut-out fuse and changed the incoming cable. After that, his electricity came back to normal. The TNB technician also advised him to get an electrician to check the house wiring properly, because when the TNB fuse burns, there must be a reason behind it. That’s why the customer still wanted us to come over and inspect his house wiring and overall electrical condition, to make sure everything inside was still safe and not affected by the earlier issue. The customer is very worried about safety, so he insists that we help him with troubleshooting. He wants to make sure there are no hidden problems inside the wiring that could cause the same issue again or lead to a fire risk. Following TNB’s advice, the customer booked an appointment with us for the next day to carry out a full inspection.

Customer Requests On Electrical Troubleshooting

The next day around 1 p.m., we reached the customer’s house and started our inspection. We opened up the DB box to check the wiring inside and see if there were any signs of overheating or loose connections. Since the TNB fuse had burned previously, our main concern was to find out if any internal wiring had been damaged or if there were any weak points that could cause the same issue to happen again.

When we check around the house, we notice the kitchen area is fully extended and renovated. The study room, laundry area, living hall and dining hall also have many new power points added for daily use. However, the DB box only has 19 MCBs, which immediately raises a red flag. Straight away, we suspect the previous wireman did some shortcuts during the renovation. Inside the DB box, we find that the number of earth wires and neutral wires doesn’t match properly. This kind of wiring imbalance can cause unstable voltage and even lead to tripping or burnt connections if not corrected.

Loud Humming & Overheating RCCB and Main Switch Issue

Once we open up his DB box, we can hear a very loud humming sound coming from the main switch and the RCCB. The temperature is extremely high, and we can’t even touch the surface with our hand. Straight away, we know something is not right. We then bring out our thermographic meter to check, and it confirms that both the main switch and the RCCB are overheated. We then turn on all the home appliances, including the air conditioners, water heaters, oven, microwave, lights, and TV, and let them run for about 15 minutes. After a while, we notice the wires inside the DB box become very hot and the RCCB and main switch get even hotter. You can’t even touch them by hand because they are burning hot. At that point, we know the problem is serious and needs to be fixed immediately before it causes more damage. Some of the MCBs also start to heat up quickly. This confirms that the problem is not just from the incoming TNB supply, but also from the internal wiring and load distribution inside the house.

We then use an ELCB wall socket tester to check all the power plugs in the house. Some of the plugs show no earth connection, while others have the live and neutral wires reversed. This kind of wiring mistake is very dangerous because it can cause electric shock or damage to appliances. It also explains why the main switch and RCCB were humming and overheating earlier, because the wiring throughout the house is not balanced and not properly connected. We also find that some power points are completely dead, so we quickly fix them for the customer to restore proper connection and safety. In the end, we restore all plug points to the correct and working condition.

Solution: Replace Main Switch and RCCB

After we finish checking everything, we tell the customer it’s better to replace all the MCBs, RCCB, and the main switch to make sure everything is safe because his current MCBs are very old and mixed with a few different brands. But the customer says he only wants to change the RCCB and main switch first. So we just follow what he prefers. After we replace both, the loud humming sound disappears straight away. The DB box becomes quiet and the temperature drops to normal. Now the main switch and RCCB are only warm, and you can touch them by hand without any problem.
