Burning Smell from Sockets in Kuchai Lama Condominium

A few days ago, we received an urgent call from a customer in Kuchai Lama. He sounded worried and explained that he could smell burning from two sockets in his kitchen area. He feared that if left unattended, the problem might escalate into a fire hazard. Naturally, we agreed that this issue needed to be checked as soon as possible.

Initially, we scheduled our visit for Friday, the very next day. However, the customer suddenly received an urgent call from his boss and had to postpone our appointment. In cases like this, we always adjust according to the client’s availability because safety comes first, and it’s important that the customer is present when we troubleshoot and explain the findings.

The Power Sockets In The Kitchen

When we finally arrived at his unit, we found two main sockets in the kitchen area.

There are two sockets in the house’s kitchen area.

  • One socket was used for the water thermo pot.
  • The other socket was shared by the washing machine, fridge, oven, and dryer.

This setup immediately raised a red flag. High-powered appliances like ovens, dryers, and washing machines are never meant to share a single socket because the load is simply too much. Even the fridge, though not high-wattage compared to an oven, requires a stable and dedicated supply. Over time, such a setup can cause wires, sockets, or breakers to overheat.

Sure enough, both sockets in the kitchen emitted a noticeable burning smell. The customer did the right thing by turning off the affected points and calling for professional help instead of continuing to use them.

Electrical Work Restrictions at the Condominium

This case wasn’t just a matter of electrical troubleshooting; it also came with some logistical challenges. The customer lived in a condominium with strict rules for contractors. Before we could even start work, we had to submit forms at the management office. On top of that, work hours were restricted to between 9 am and 1 pm only.

While this arrangement is understandable from a building management perspective, it can be troublesome for both contractors and residents because it limits the time available to carry out proper checks and repairs. Nevertheless, we complied with the regulations and made sure all work was carried out within the allocated timeframe.

What Electrical Components We Repaired

We carried out a detailed inspection of the two sockets and the connected circuits. After confirming that both sockets were compromised, we replaced them with brand-new ones. We also changed the C20 MCB to ensure better protection for the circuit.

For this job, our charges were kept simple and transparent:

  • RM200 for troubleshooting.
  • RM80 to replace the two sockets and one MCB.

We believe in fair pricing and being upfront with customers, so there are no hidden costs or surprise add-ons.

Electrical Circuit Upgrade Recommendation for Kuchai Lama Customer

After reviewing the load usage, we explained to the customer that the real issue wasn’t just the sockets, it was the overloading. Putting a washing machine, oven, fridge, and dryer all on one socket is simply too much for any wiring to handle safely.

We strongly recommended installing four new circuits with separate cables, one each for the washing machine, oven, fridge and dryer. By distributing the load across individual circuits, the system would:

  • Prevent overloading and overheating.
  • Reduce the chances of fire hazards.
  • Ensure each appliance has a stable and reliable power supply.
  • Extend the lifespan of the sockets, MCBs, and wiring.

This is the correct and long-term solution to prevent the same issue from recurring.

Why the Kuchai Lama Customer Called for Electrical Help

Interestingly, the customer had already hired another wireman before contacting us. That wireman had gone through all the power points and even checked the MCBs, but unfortunately, he still couldn’t identify the root cause of the burning smell.

That left the customer uneasy, because while the initial inspection gave him some reassurance, the smell persisted. In the end, he decided to call us for a second opinion. This decision turned out to be the right one, because we managed to trace the source of the problem, replace the damaged parts, and advise him on a permanent solution.

Electrical issues like burning smells from sockets should never be ignored. They are clear warning signs of overheating, loose connections, or overloading, any of which can lead to serious fire hazards if left untreated.

In this Kuchai Lama case, replacing the damaged sockets and MCB solved the immediate risk. However, the long-term solution we recommended is installing four new dedicated circuits. This will truly safeguard the customer’s home, ensuring reliable power for heavy appliances like the washing machine, oven, fridge, and dryer.

Homeowners, take note: if you ever smell burning from a socket, don’t wait. Switch it off immediately and call a qualified wireman. A quick inspection and proper rewiring can make the difference between a safe home and a dangerous fire incident.
