Aircond & Microwave Keep Tripping the Whole House in Shah Alam?
Last week, I got a call from a homeowner in Shah Alam who was really frustrated. Every time they tried to turn on their living room aircond, the whole house tripped. Not only that, but even their microwave caused the same problem. Imagine wanting to heat up dinner or cool down the room and suddenly the whole house goes dark.
The family told me it was a very difficult night. They normally enjoy relaxing together in the living room, the parents watch TV while the children play the piano after dinner. But with no electricity, the room was hot, stuffy and pitch black. The kids couldn’t practice, the TV couldn’t be switched on, and everyone ended up sweating in silence. They just wanted the problem solved quickly so their home life could get back to normal.
What’s Really Happening When the Whole House Trips?
Most people straightaway think, “Maybe the MCB rosak (faulty) or the DB box is too old.” But actually, the MCB is doing its job. It’s designed to trip when there’s an overload or short circuit, to prevent damage to your wiring and protect your family.
If switching on one appliance like an aircond or microwave causes the whole DB box to trip, the problem usually comes down to:
- Wiring contactor takes shortcut by looping the neutral and live wires.
- Overloaded circuits (too many heavy appliances on the same breaker)
- Loose or weak wiring connections
- Low-quality or wrongly installed breakers

The Dirty Tricks Some Wiring Contractors Do
Now here’s something we need to inform the Shah Alam homeowners about.
The wiring contractor takes shortcuts just to save time and money. They did things like:
- Instead of running proper separate lines, the wireman looped the neutral wires from one circuit to another.
- We also found signs that some live wires were looped. He looped all the fan points in the living room, kitchen, and dining room onto the same line.
- When I dug deeper, it became clear the previous wireman had taken too many shortcuts. Not only were the neutral wires looped between circuits, and the fan points in the living, kitchen, and dining room all looped together on one line, but I also found that many home appliances and plug points’ earth wires were looped as well.
Even worse… looping earth wires. This is the most dangerous trick because when a short circuit or leakage happens, your “safety earth” may not even work. That means no protection when you need it most. From the outside, you won’t see anything wrong. Everything looks neat in the DB box. But behind the scenes, it’s a ticking time bomb.
Why Cheapest Isn’t Always the Best
Here’s something I always remind my customers in Shah Alam:
Choosing the cheapest electrician may save you RM200–RM300 now, but in the long run, it will cost you much more. I’ve seen cases where “budget” work caused:
- Sockets melting from overheated wires
- Appliances burning out
- RCCB and MCB failing within months
- Loop wiring mess that makes the whole DB trip with just one small fault
When it comes to your family’s safety, cutting corners is never worth it.
How to Avoid This Problem
- Always separate heavy appliances (aircond, water heater, oven, microwave) on their own dedicated MCB.
- Regularly check your DB box for loose connections or burnt marks.
- Make sure you’re using quality MCBs, RCCBs and wiring – not the cheapest option available.
