Buzzing, Flickering or Unstable Power? What Happened in a Shah Alam Home
Yesterday I received a call from a man in Shah Alam who was experiencing electrical issues at his home. He explained that his house distribution board or DB box, was making a strange buzzing noise, which he described as unusual and concerning. In addition to the buzzing sound, he noted that the lighting in his house was unstable. At times, the lights would become dim and at other times, they would shine unusually bright. The ceiling fan in his home also showed irregular behavior with its speed fluctuating between running fast and running slow without any apparent reason.
The customer mentioned that his regular electrician had already visited his house to inspect the electrical system. According to the customer, the electrician replaced several MCBs and some wiring in an attempt to resolve the issue. Despite these replacements, the problem persisted. I asked the customer how the wireman performed the inspection and traced the source of the problem. He replied that the electrician only used a test pen and pliers and did not use a multimeter or any other proper electrical testing equipment.
Based on the information provided, it appears that the electrical issue may involve loose connections, faulty wiring or a problem with the distribution board/ fuse box that requires more thorough testing with appropriate electrical testing tools. Using only a test pen and pliers is insufficient to accurately diagnose fluctuating voltage, abnormal current flow or potential hazards. Proper electrical testing and troubleshooting with suitable instruments are necessary to identify the root cause and ensure safety.

RM 450 For Home Wiring Troubleshooting In Shah Alam
I remember this customer contacted us last month. I quoted him RM 450 for troubleshooting, but he never got back to me. Today over the phone, he said it’s just a minor problem and he only wants the main switch replaced. I was like, “Haha, he has a regular wireman who could handle this. Why did he contact me in the first place? Strange.”
Something doesn’t seem right, and I guess his regular wireman isn’t able to help him. After discussing with the customer, we agreed on RM450 for troubleshooting, with parts charged separately. We scheduled a time in the afternoon.
On the same day, we went to his house and helped troubleshoot his electrical system. During the inspection, we found that the main switch was burnt and the neutral wire was also damaged. Honestly, RM450 is not expensive considering the amount of work involved. There were many things that needed to be checked and tested to find the root cause of the problem.
His 2.5 HP air conditioner and water heater are connected to the same circuit. This means he can never take a hot shower and turn on the air conditioner at the same time, or the MCB will trip. The wiring quality is very poor, just a cheap “cap ayam” brand. The cable is labeled as 2.5mm, but the copper inside is extremely thin, far below the proper standard.

The Worst Wiring We’ve Seen in Shah Alam
Two bedrooms share the same circuit for their socket outlets. In total, there are 14 sockets connected to that single circuit. The master bedroom has a computer, CCTV, TV, fan, sound system, and massage chair, while the second bedroom has a TV, computer, printer and sound system. According to the son, when the father is in the master bedroom, his son’s computer monitor shows many lines, and the TV also displays blinking blue lines. This is obviously caused by insufficient voltage and current supply due to the overloaded shared circuit.
The same issue was found in the kitchen. The induction cooker, exhaust fan and hood were all connected to one circuit. On top of that, the microwave, water filter and washing machine were also sharing another single circuit. With so many high-power appliances running together, it’s no surprise the system keeps overloading and tripping.
